Go to where the people are, even if it leads you to social media. Social media is a staple for information in today’s society. If your church isn’t on social media yet, I strongly suggest that you create an account on at least one platform and use it regularly.
Facebook is the most common social media platform, and it’s pretty easy to use. With Facebook, you have a couple of options that invite people to engage with your church, either a page or a group. Both groups and pages allow you to send out updates with pictures and videos attached.
But which makes the most sense for a church? I’d suggest a page instead of a group for a couple of reasons: a page allows you to promote your organization and is searchable via the search bar. That means more potential visitors to your page.
Groups, on the other hand, are primarily used to connect people around a common interest. They cannot be searched unless the person is already in the group, so there’s a narrower reach.
Twitter is a great outlet to get short snippets of information out quickly, and creating a profile for your church is simple. You can simply sign up on either the website or app. Twitter allows you to send out short updates (up to 140 characters) to followers with pictures, gifs, and videos attached.
There are several other social media platforms that you could sign up for as well, but Facebook and Twitter are generally the most common for daily use. Regardless of the platform you choose, all content that you upload needs to be relevant to both the congregation and the people you are trying to reach. Relevant content could be video or audio of sermons, uplifting scripture, or upcoming events at the church.
When you start a social media account, it takes time to build your followers and engagement. You can put your new social media handles in your weekly bulletin to remind your congregation to follow or like the account. Even if it takes longer than you expect to see results, don’t give up on putting out content, because one day it may be seen by the person who needs it most.
